Belt Testing

Order of the belts

Belt Testing In Shotakan Karate, the Karateka (Karate student) begins with a white belt and ends full circle with a white belt. The black color on the belt is worn away through experience and practice. Most beginners and non-Karate practicioners are overly concerned with the color of ones belt. Each color symbolizes the Karateka's knowledge level and attitude of Karate priciples. One is never an expert in karate.

The order of belts is:

  White - 9th Kyu

• Yellow - 8th Kyu

• Orange - 7th Kyu

• Green - 6th Kyu

• Purple - 5th Kyu

• Blue - 4th Kyu

• Brown with white stripe - 3rd Kyu

 Brown - 2nd Kyu

• Brown with Black stripe - 1st Kyu

• Black - 1st Dan
